“What did you expect? I mean really! What did you think would happen when the lot of us waltzed into a church in the late morning on a weekday dragging two vampires and a guy who looks like Ichabod Crane’s taller brother, followed by a midget witch festooned in a rather garishly pointy witch hat?”

It went down exactly as I expected it would. Well, maybe not entirely the way I expected. After all, I didn’t know Laura Brewster would throw such a monumental hissy fit sending the choir after us with hymn books flapping. Nor did I think being hit by the tiny hymnals would hurt as much as it did.

Nor did I think Minerva and Hettie, two of the choir ladies in the congregation, would have such strong sets of teeth seeing as how both of the women were nearing their nineties if they hadn’t already reached such a lofty age. My leg still smarted where Hettie clamped down, while my arm still bore the marks of Minerva’s rather vice-like grip. It took me ten minutes to pry open her dentures and remove them from where they were hanging from my weenus, er, the excessive soft skin when my elbow is not bent, that is.

The rest of the choir had attacked my group with gleeful abandon while singing the praises of the Lord. Beulah, she of the deep voice and scripture pontificating from the last time we met, had even brandished a broom, swinging it at Mortimer’s head like a baseball bat. He’d be pulling plastic bristles out of his skin for the next week, so efficient was Beulah at nailing him on his noggin.

Right now, we were trying to figure out what to do about the lot of them, tied up and sitting on the floor of the church while we blockaded the entry in case any more from their congregation decided to show up.

“Oh, look, Minerva! It’s the Papist. Remember her, dear? Only her intelligent friend isn’t with her this time. And she’s dressed like one of those Satanist tarts you see in the movies, like that Angelina Jolie person.” Hettie declared, giving me the once-over.

Hey! Wait a minute. If Andrea was the intelligent one, what did they consider me?

“And a New Yorker! I told you one can never trust a Yankee,” Minerva nodded in agreement and bequeathed me the old stink eye.

Oh, well that explains it.

“What are you doing? Take your hands off me! Take your filthy hands off me!” Laura Brewster was screeching at the top of her lungs and acting like we were pummeling her into submission when all Caliente did was escort her to a pew.

“Lady, if you don’t shut it, I will give you something to really scream about,” Pandora wasn’t amused by the overzealous attack on her person nor the sniveling Laura who’d summed up our gang in one succinct observation.

“Demons! The lot of you!” Laura cried.

“Now, Laura, honey. Don’t rile up these folks until we know what they want with us.
